the slightly tapered cameo red and white glass cut with flowering irises and highlighted with gilt, signed on base Daum, Nancy, and with the Cross of Lorraine, the silver-gilt neck mount chased to match on matted ground, leafy scroll handle and rococo revival spout and handle with morning glory finial, marked right of handle and with Gorham shell date mark for 1896

The 1896 Gorham date mark on this piece shows that the French glass arrived in Providence when William C. Codman was just beginning to explore Art Nouveau. The first pieces of Martelé, his signature Art Nouveau line, would not be publicly shown until the following year.
