91.4 x 113.4 cm.; 36 x 44⅝ in.

William Teacher (1811-76);
Thence by descent to the previous owner;
By whom sold, Edinburgh, Lyon & Turnbull, 20 May 2021, lot 405 (as Follower of Campidoglio).

The composition of this painting and the silver urn placed in its centre are comparable to the signed canvas by Abraham Brueghel - which shares affinities both with the artist's late Roman and Neapolitan periods and probably dates to the mid-1670s - today in the Museum Boymans van Beuningen, Rotterdam.1

William Teacher (see Provenance) was a Scottish wine and spirit merchant, born in Paisley. At his death, he was probably the largest multiple retailer of whisky, selling a varied stock in eighteen licensed 'dram' shops. He went into wholesaling in 1851, and the business was developed by his two eldest sons, who went on to open branches in Manchester and London, registered the blend Highland Cream, and built a malt distillery in Ardmore.
