nerikawa gusoku [armour] 

Edo period, 18th century 


Kabuto [helmet]:

The sabiji-nuri [simulated russet iron] lacquered bowl with raised ridges, terminating in a five-stage copper tehen kanamonosabiji-nuri mabisashi [peak], large black lacquered fukigaeshi with applied manji crests, two-tiered black lacquer shikoro [neck guard] with sugake odoshi [spaced lacing] in green braid, the gold lacquered maedate [forecrest] in the form of a stylised crescent moon

 

Mempo [face mask]:

The sabiji-nuri mempo [face mask] in ryubu style with gentle expression, unwrinkled face and mouth slightly ajar, detachable nose plate, yadome [standing flanges] to the cheeks, red lacquer interior, two-tiered yodaregake [throat protector] laced in matching braid

 

Do [cuirass]:

The do [cuirass] of hatomune [pigeon breast] form hinged in two pieces and comprised of black lacquered leather vertical plates, eight tassets of five-tiered kusazuri [skirt], all components laced in matching braid

 

Sode, kote [shoulder guards and sleeves]:

Six-tiered sode, chainmail kote, silk brocade lining

 

Haidate, sune-ate [thigh protectors and shin guards]:

Black lacquer kawara haidate [thigh guards] with silk brocade lining, tsutsu form suneate [shin guards]

 

Accessories: 

Accompanied with armour storage box 


Mounted on the armour storage box: approx. 149 cm., 58⅝ in. high

The armour storage box: 57 x 42 x 42 cm., 58 x 22½ x 22½ in.
