A hoshi-bachi [helmet with seated rivets]

Edo period, 18th century


the twenty-eight plate russet iron bowl with seated rivets and raised ridges, the frontal plates with three rivetted shinodare [ornamental strips], four-stage russet iron tehen kanamono floret, russet iron mabisashi [peak], the large fukigaeshi [turnbacks] in stenciled Dutch leather, copper-gilt mokko mon [stylised melon crests], two-tiered black lacquer manju-jikoro [rounded neck guard] with spaced lacing in dark blue braid


The bowl to peak: 30 cm., 12 in.

The shikoro to peak: 36 cm., 14⅛ in.
