Katy Grannan’s breakout series Boulevard (2008-2010) marked the beginning of the photographer’s extended work in street portraiture. These photographs are spontaneous collaborations between Grannan and the “hustlers, strutters, addicts and beauty queens” she met on Hollywood sidewalks and in San Francisco’s Tenderloin District. Boulevard and her subsequent series, 99, unfold as an enormous procession of humanity – a dance macabre of the marginalized and powerless. Grannan uses the ubiquitous sun-bleached white walls of city buildings as an impromptu, decontextualized backdrop that emphasizes her sitters’ individuality and defies any preconceived assumption of “anonymity.”
Grannan and LA-based artist Charlie White were the subject in 2012 of The Sun and Other Stars, a two-person exhibition at The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, which included a comprehensive display of the Boulevard series. Her photographs were also featured in an exhibition at FOAM Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam in 2015.
Other prints of this image are in the collections of Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; and Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
