Three greyish-celadon jade discs, bi, Neolithic period, Hongshan culture | 新石器時代 紅山文化 青灰玉璧三件

Square jade discs with holes, similar to the present lot, have been excavated from the Hongshan culture area. See a similar example in the National Museum of China, illustrated in Zhongguo gudai yuqi yishu [Art of Ancient Chinese Jade], Beijing, 2011, p.18; Another example attributed to the Hongshan culture is from the Liaoning Provincial Museum, see Zhongguo yuqi quanji [Complete Collection of Chinese Jades], Beijing, 1992, vol.1, pl. 4. Jade bi discs of similar shape have also been found from other Neolithic sites, such as one example from the second phase of the Miaodigou culture, currently in the Shaanxi Provincial Institute of Archaeological Research, see Gu Fang, The Complete Collection of Jades Unearthed in China, Beijing, 2005, vol. 3, p. 4.

三璧青玉質，較大兩璧呈方形，最大者上端兩小穿，其餘兩件沁色統一。

紅山文化地區曾出土此類方形帶穿玉璧，如中國國家博物館藏一件紅山文化玉璧，見《中國古代玉器藝術》，北京，2011年，頁18；以及遼寧省博物館藏一件紅山文化方形玉璧，見《中國玉器全集》，北京，1992年，卷1，圖版4。其他地區新石器時期文化遺址亦有出土類似方璧，參考陝西省考古研究所藏一件廟底溝二期文化方形玉器，見古方，《中國出土玉器全集》，北京，2005年，卷3，頁4。
