Description
A jade scabbard slide,
Western Han dynasty
8.5 cm
Acquired from Mr Yip Wai Tat, Hong Kong, 1990s.
The production of jade scabbard slides decorated with a beast mask and cloud pattern probably had been standardised in the Western Han dynasty, as the patterns are found highly similar. See two closely related examples, one exhibited in the British Museum, illustrated in Jessica Rawson, Chinese Jade from the Neolithic to the Qing, London, 1995, p.300, pl. 12:12; another one is in the Human Museum, published in Yang Boda, zhongguo yuqi quanji, Shijiazhuang, 2005, vol.4, pl. 212.
