woodblock print, from the series Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido (Tokaido gojusan tsugi no uchi), also known as the First Tokaido or Great Tokaido, signed Hiroshige ga (Pictured by Hiroshige), published by Takenouchi Magohachi (Hoeido), circa 1833-34
Horizontal oban: 24.4 x 36.9 cm., 9¾ x 14½ in.
Travellers approach the coastal village of Numazu by moonlight. This station along the Tokaido [lit. Eastern Sea Route] is famous for its forest which stretches along the seashore. The traveller dressed in white carries a large tengu mask on his back, indicating he is a pilgrim to the Shinto shrine of Kompira on Shikoku Island.
