Half-title, 16-page publisher's catalogue at end, followed by 4-page advertisement of Dr Alexander Carlyle's autobiography; light spotting, mainly marginal, preliminarily to the prelims and first 2 pages, small marginal tear to v. Publisher's orange cloth by Burn, spine gilt; spine bumped at head and foot, some very light soiling to covers, extremities bumped. Collectors quarter calf clamshell box.


First edition of George Eliot's third published novel.


Eliot's powerful tale of a linen weaver provides a vehicle to dissect moral and social values of the day, with use of mythic and folk references.
