Nice refreshes the classical approach and meticulous precision of nineteenth century encyclopedic illustrators like Audubon or Ernst Haeckel, with representations of contemporary Americana. Evidencing a clear influence from Warhol combined with the representational acumen of Richard Estes or Malcolm Morley, Nice establishes a realist vocabulary that toys with the homogeneity and sterility of mass-produced culture. Nice has been in the Allan Stone collection since its early years, and exhibited at Stone’s eponymous gallery several times in the late ’60s and early ’70s. In 1963, the artist won the Ford Foundation Purchase Award, and he has been an artist-in-residence at Dartmouth since 1982. Nice has been subject of countless solo exhibitions, and is also featured in many prominent institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Art Institute of Chicago; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; as well as the collection of Chase Manhattan Bank.
