This bronze, acquired by the esteemed American photographer Gertrude Kasebier in New York in December 1912, holds a special significance. Kasebier, a prominent figure in the world of photography, was a principal member of the Photo-Secession group of pictorialists, a movement founded in 1902 by Alfred Stieglitz and like-minded artists who sought to elevate photography to a form of individual artistic expression.
As a member of the Photo-Secession, Kasebier championed artistic composition and handcrafted prints, emphasizing the artistic potential of photography as a distinct medium. Her reverence for the renowned sculptor Rodin was evident in her photographic works, with her photographs of Rodin considered among her greatest achievements. Rodin himself gifted this bronze portrait to Kasebier, underscoring the personal and artistic connection between the two visionaries.
