The attribution was first suggested by Philip Pouncey (see Literature). Chiarini, in his monograph on Filippo Napoletano, suggested a late dating, between 1622 and 1629, though noted that the drawing was most probably made after the artist’s Florentine period, and following his return to Rome in around 1626. Chiarini has also pointed out stylistic similarities with the three battle paintings on copper now in the Chigi Saracini collection, Siena (see Chiarini, op. cit., pp. 330-331, reproduced and in color pp. 182-183).
