The inception of the Centigraphe can be traced back to a fortuitous encounter between Francois-Paul Journe and passionate collector Jean Todt, who served as the executive director of Scuderia Ferrari at the time. Their meeting, facilitated by the ICM foundation, led to the creation of a chronograph specifically tailored for the world of car racing. Demonstrating his philanthropic spirit, Journe decided that 30% of the profits from this remarkable timepiece would be donated to the Institut du Cerveau et de la Moelle épinière, known as 'ICM.'
An instantly recognizable feature of the Centigraphe collection is its distinctive three-register chronograph dial—the first hand-wound wristwatch capable of measuring elapsed times from 100th of a second to 10 minutes. F. P. Journe's ingenious movement design separates the chronograph complication from the timekeeping mechanism, ensuring utmost accuracy while the chronograph is in operation. Unlike conventional watches, the chronograph can be activated using an ergonomic rocker arm system, minimizing energy loss and maintaining precision upon activation.
