Ever snared in their pursuit for the most reliable complications, Patek Phillippe is constantly pushing the boundaries of haute horology. Their highly regarded Grand Complications collection is a spectacle of ultra-complicated pieces that perfectly embodies this passion, in fact it would not be far-fetched to argue that some pieces in the Grand Complications collection are the most influential timepieces to ever grace the world.

Produced from 1993, reference 3939 marks a spectacular member of the Grand Complications collection. A watch with an elegant but minimalistic enamel dial, a rather tame visual if not for the delicately added Breguet numerals and the use of a small seconds hand. But make no mistake, while the appearance of this wristwatch is simple and serene, the construction and history behind it is rich and meticulous.

Underneath the dial lies the labyrinth of machinery to which the watch owes its soul. While most watchmakers prefer to proudly showcase their tourbillon constructions on the front, Patek like usual, humbly reserve theirs to be only visible from the sapphire crystal back. Along with the tourbillon that could already be considered an achievement on its own, the watch contains an impressive minute repeater - a mechanism that chimes a sound unique to each piece and is testament to a legacy long before the use of electric lights. Yet, the repeater exists not only as an enchanting relic of the past, but an epitome of Patek Philippe's dominance in creating the most resounding chiming mechanisms on the market.
