 This painting explores a moral theme that was popular in the sixteenth century, disseminated mostly through engravings.

The rich man, dozing in his luxurious loggia, surrounded by visible signs of his wealth – fine foods, a bulging purse, a chest full of gold – is surprised by the sudden appearance of Death, in the form of an emaciated corpse, about to spear him.

In the background, on the right, the loggia’s portico opens onto a lush agricultural landscape, in which one of the rich man’s foremen seems to be showing one of his peasants the extent of his land holdings.

The work’s style, composition and bright, acidic colours, as well as the angel’s physical type, are strongly suggestive of the work of Maarten de Vos.

Le tableau reprend une thématique morale fréquente au XVI^e siècle, véhiculée principalement par le biais de la gravure.

L’homme riche, assoupi dans sa luxueuse loggia, entouré des signes ostensibles de son aisance - mets délicats, bourse bien remplie, coffret rempli d’or –, est surpris par l’irruption de la mort, sous la forme d’un cadavre décharné, qui s’apprête à lui lancer un trait.

Sur la droite, à l’arrière-plan, le portique de la loggia s’ouvre sur un riche paysage agricole, où l’un des contremaîtres de l’homme riche semble s’adresser à l’un de ses paysans, montrant l’étendue de sa fortune foncière.

Le style de l’œuvre, sa composition et son coloris vif et acidulé, tout comme le type physique de l’ange, rappellent fortement l’art de Maarten de Vos.
