Matt Connors (US, b. 1973) is known for his paintings that explore aspects of modern and contemporary abstraction, including the use of bold color, gestures, and compositional structures such as gridding. His visual language is also influenced by poetry, music, and writing. Connors creates his compositions by layering and reworking sources such as found images or his own sketches and photographs. In Prompter, both acrylic and oil paint are used to create varied textures, inviting the viewer into the artist’s iterative process.


Connors lives and works in New York and Los Angeles. His work has been included in the 2022 Whitney Biennial and shown at institutions such as the Kunstmuseum Bonn; Museum of Modern Art, New York; and the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. His work is held in the collections of major museums including Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh; Dallas Museum of Art; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Museum of Modern Art, New York; and the Walker Art Center.
