Lubaina Himid’s (UK, b. 1954) practice ranges across media, from traditional paintings on canvas to large-scale installations featuring life-size human cutouts. She rose to prominence in the 1980s as a cultural activist and pioneer of the British Black Arts Movement and has continued to be a staunch advocate for women of color within the arts. Himid’s series Negative Positives examines how Black people are (mis)represented in the pages of the Guardian newspaper. She takes the story and elevates it, most often by painting brightly colored motifs from African textiles atop the pages.
Himid is the recipient of the Suzanne Deal Booth/FLAG Art Foundation Prize, the Maria Lassnig Prize, and the Turner Prize. She was the subject of a major survey at Tate Modern. Her work is held in the collections of the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Hessel Museum of Art, Annandale-on-Hudson, New York; Museum Ludwig, Cologne; National Museums, Liverpool; Rhode Island School of Design, Providence; Royal Academy, London; Tate, London; and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London; among others.
