Amitabha flanked by two standing bodhisattvas is seated at the apex of the central shrine, with Avalokiteshvara and Tara seated on a double lotus throne below. The shrine is surrounded by myriad Buddhas, retinue gods and goddesses, Buddhist Worldly Protectors and Brahmanical Guardians of the Directions. The painting is mounted in what is likely the original blue silk fishtail mounts and veils. The painting style is closely related to the set of fifteenth century Lamdre lineage thangkas commissioned by Ngorchen Kunga Zangpo (1382-1456) for the Sakya monastery of Ngor which he founded in 1429, see lot 31: compare the palette, the format of the lion thrones, the distinctive lotus petal seats, and the supports issuing from golden kalasha vases. This fine painting of Amitabha, Avalokiteshvara and Green Tara is thus likely to be similarly dated to between 1429 and 1456.
