PORTRAIT OF A LADY

bears signature and date l.l.: Kelly [1]914

oil on canvas

101.5 by 76cm., 40 by 30in.

Adam's, Dublin, 10 March 1988 (as by Sir Gerald Festus Kelly)

Originally the present painting was thought to be a portrait by Sir Gerald Kelly of his wife. However, the finish of the work, the atypical signature and the fact no records can be found which support this attribution suggest otherwise. In style it also recalls the work of Sir Oswald Birley, Howard Somerville and Arthur Paine Garratt but there is insufficient information to make a full attribution. The work is typical of the type of portraiture that was popular in Britain in the 1910s and 20s.
