Description

Property from a Private Collection

Jan Havicksz. Steen

Leiden 1626–1679

Man sharpening a pen

signed lower left: JSteen (JS in ligature)

oil on oak panel

unframed: 32.9 x 21.4 cm.; 13 x 8⅜ in.

framed: 44.4 x 32.9 cm.; 17½ x 13 in.

In the possession of the family of the present owner for more than sixty years.

The unusual elongated dimensions of this panel correspond to those of another signed painting by Steen, depicting a Woman Counting Coins, which is in the Leiden Collection.1 That picture, likewise untraced in previous Steen literature, is also painted on a panel of horizontal grain and has been dated to circa 1665. It has previously been suggested that the Leiden Collection work may represent a portrait of Steen's sister, but the emergence of the present panel as a likely pendant makes this theory less probable.

We are grateful to Wouter Kloek for his help in the cataloguing of this lot, and for his tentative endorsement of the attribution to Steen on the basis of digital images.
