Description

Rhodonite Crystals

Conselheiro Lafaiete, (old Queluz de Minas), Minas Gerais, Brazil

2¼ by 1½ by 1½ inches (5.7 x 3.8 x 3.8 cm). Custom lucite base.

A richly colored and terminated rhodonite crystal.

Rhodonite is the official gemstone of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, with the specimen offered here yielding from the classic Brazilian manganese mine, Morro da Mina.

Rhodonite is a type of manganese inosilicate, crystallizing in the triclinic system. Surface oxidation often results in a brownish color, but higher quality specimens exhibit the rose-red color from which its name is derived ("rhodos" is Greek for "rosy").
