Description

Fluorite Crystals

Teller County, Colorado, United States

5 by 5 by 2 inches (12.7 x 12.7 x 5 cm). 5 pounds (2.3 kg). Custom lucite base.

Large green fluorite crystals overgrown by a latter generation of dark purple fluorite, giving the crystals a “tie-dye” appearance. The assemblage has formed over a piece of graphic granite, with terminated smoky quartz crystals poking through on the left-hand side.

Also known as fluorspar, fluorite is often transparent, making it valuable in the production of various types of glass. The mineral form of calcium flouride, fluorite takes on various hues, with this brilliant green and dark purple "tie-dye" specimen being a prime example.

Colorado is a prolific producer of pegmatite minerals, but large fluorite specimen are not terribly common. Often, the fluorite crystals are small, and of little note. The fluorite specimen offered here is the exception to that rule.
