A fine original illustration by Annie French (1872-1965), a prominent member of the Glasgow Girls art movement, whose influences also included Aubrey Beardsley and Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Unlike her contemporary Jessie M. King (for whom see lots 202 and 293), French's "interest in art was encouraged by her family, and she was a student at the Glasgow School of Art from 1886 to 1889. She taught at the school's department of ceramic decoration from 1908 to 1912" (ODNB).
