Original watercolour illustration produced for the 1938 series of American Weekly covers, 'Fighting women', published 17th July 1938. Molly Pitcher was a hero of the American Revolution who at the battle of Monmouth, New Jersey, took the place of her wounded husband at the cannon. The other fighting women included in the series were: Penethesilea, Hyppolyte, Zenobia, Mu-Lan, Joan of Arc, and Thomysis (see lot 278).
