The tenth vintage made of this top Cuvée. In 2017, it has matured quite considerably, keeping its toasty depth and 1996 acidity, but it is now a meal Champagne rather than aperitif style, with a texture one can almost bite into. Serena Sutcliffe, MW

Provenance:

The collection, acquired from reputable UK wine merchants, was started well over 40 years ago and since original purchase has only been moved once - for the purposes of this sale. The Doctor established deep, personal contacts with the great and the good in the UK wine trade at that time, and it was from them that he acquired his extensive knowledge of Fine Wine. All the original invoices have been kept on record, together with initial offers, newsletters etc. The sale opens with a swathe of Armand Rousseau and Georges Roumier, which is followed in alphabetical order by grower by the likes of Marquis d'Angerville, Ghislaine Barthod, Jean Grivot, Anne Gros, Henri and Georges Jayer and Emmanuel Rouget. White Burgundy is represented by Chablis from Dauvissat in profusion, and choice gems from Lafon and Leflaive. Underpinning all this are treasures from the Rhône, Bordeaux and Champagne, including masses of Krug and Pol Roger. The majority of this collection has benefitted from high-quality professional storage at London City Bond. The last 60 or so lots, stored in our Greenford warehouse, were removed from the Doctor's own cellars, naturally cool and damp, and located under an imposing traditional English country house. The Doctor sought to delay the effects of the high humidity of his own cellars in a number of ways, such as wrapping the bottles in clingfilm or plastic bags, or through the use of hair lacquer or varnish applied to the labels. Details of what was done is given in each lot description. The condition and the colour of the wine is remarkable. In either case, the quality of the storage is evidenced by the generally excellent levels in these mature bottles.

-         to an address in London: £35 for the first 10 cases, plus £10 for any additional case, plus VAT and Sotheby’s Transit Care cover;

-         to a UK address outside of London (excluding Ireland and Scotland): £45 for the first 10 cases, plus £10 for any additional case, plus VAT and Sotheby’s Transit Care cover.
