Description
[STS-41B]
The First Untethered Spacewalk
Large color photograph, 20 x 16 inches, SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Mission Specialist 1 BRUCE McCANDLESS II: "Oh God, Thy sea is so great / and my boat is so small! / Bruce McCandless II / STS 41·B"
The pictured spacewalk marked the first use of the Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU), a propulsion unit designed to allow astronauts to perform spacewalks without a safety tether holding them near the spacecraft. Though successful, the unit was retired after its third mission; a safety review following the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster found the unit too risky.
