In 2011 Patek Philippe presented during Basel fair reference 5270 meant to replace reference 5970 and marking a huge milestone for the Swiss brand as it incorporated their first perpetual chronograph to be fully in-house designed and manufactured, and consequentially marking the end of Patek Philippe using and modifying movements from third manufacturers. The dial configuration was also modified by moving the leap year indicator from the subdial to a more legible location between the 4 and 5 o'clock markers and a mirroring window between 7 and 8 o'clock now contained the day and night indicator.
This reference has become highly collectible, and the present iteration combining a platinum case and a salmon dial is rarely seen, juxtaposing a hint of vintage elegance with great legibility and performance. The present example also features a tachymeter scale, which only appeared on 5270s in 2013, a feature which harkens back to the original reference 1518 enhancing its vintage aesthetics.
