A pair of George III large silver candlesticks

John Roberts & Co., Sheffield 1807


With wreath rims and borders, and fluted stems and bases, the filled bases engraved with arms and the removable drip-pans with crests.

30cm.; 12in. high

The arms, crest and motto are those of Anderson impaling Nelthorpe, for the Rev. Sir Charles John Anderson, 8th Bt. of Broughton (5 October 1767 – 24 March 1846), who succeeded to the title upon the death of his elder brother, Sir Edmund, on 30 May 1799. Sir Charles, who was educated at University College, Oxford, was married on 13 November 1802 at Scawby, Lincolnshire, to Frances Mary (1776? - 18 August 1836), daughter of Sir John Nelthorpe, 6th Bt., and his wife, Anne Maria Charlotte, daughter of Andrew Willoughby.

‘At Lea, Lincolnshire, on the 24th of March, the Rev. Sir Charles John Anderson, Bart., in the 79th year of his age.’

‘The Rev. Sir Charles John Anderson, Bart., has bequeathed his estates to his son, Sir Charles Henry John Anderson, Bart., subject to charges by family deeds, with the sum of 11,000£. to his two daughters, and to which sum the late Reverend Baronet, by his will, has added 3,000£. making a clear sum of 7,000£. for each of his two daughters. The personalty was valued for probate duty at 8,000£. His son, Sir Charles H.J. Anderson, Bart., is the sole executor. The late Reverend Baronet held the rectories of Lea, and Bradley, and the vicarage of Scawby, all in Lincolnshire. He died at the Rectory House at Lear, near Gainsborough, on the 24th of March, in his 78th year.’
