Banquet of Achelous

oil on canvas

canvas: 45 ½ by 58 ¼ in.; 115.6 by 148.0 cm.

framed: 52 by 64 ½ in.; 132.1 by 163.8 cm.

This painting is a workshop version of Artus Wolffort's treatment of the subject circa 1625-1633 in the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum, Braunschweig (inv. no. 113).

The subject is taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses (VIII: 547-610) and depicts Achelous, patron deity of the largest river of Greece, hosting a banquet for Theseus and his companions upon their return to Athens from Crete.
