Anonymous sale ("The Property of a Lady"), London, Phillips, 10 December 1996, lot 123 (as Attributed to Willem van den Bundel);

From whom acquired by the present collector, 1997.

Born in Brussels, Willem Van den Bundel spent most of his life between Delft and Amsterdam, where he established a career as both an artist and art dealer. He specialized in wooded landscape scenes and was possibly a pupil of Gillis van Coninxloo (1544-1607), with whose works his paintings share many affinities. The presence of a wax seal on this panel's verso suggests that it once formed part of Tsar Alexander II's royal collection.
