Description

Property of a Private Collector, Texas

Workshop of Giuseppe Cesari, called Cavaliere d'Arpino

Arpino 1568 - 1640 Rome

Bacchus;

Flora

oil on panel, a pair

each panel diameter: 19 ⅛ in.; 48.6 cm.

each framed diameter: 26 ⅜ in.; 67.0 cm.

This pair of roundels originally comprised a quartet of paintings that together depicted the Four Seasons as personified by the classical gods. The production of Bacchus and Flora was almost certainly a collaborative endeavor: a highly-skilled still life specialist painted the fruit and flowers of the framing garlands and another painter, probably a member of Cavaliere d'Arpino's workshop in Rome, executed the carefully modeled faces.
