A quintessentially Dutch genre, winter landscapes burgeoned in popularity during the seventeenth century during the so-called "Little Ice Age," when the Netherlands experienced several particularly severe winters. In this example, the figures enjoy a variety of winter pastimes: the three men at left play kolf, an early version of ice hockey, while an jszeilboot, or ice boat, can be discerned in the distance. The composition recalls two works by Adam van Breen: one sold at Sotheby's, Monaco in 19941 and another at Phillips, London in July 2000.2
