The Belgian sculptor Alphonse van Beurden (1854-1938) and Pieters were both associated with the Antwerp-based art group Als Ik Kan. See Evert Pieters, 1856-1932: Zee en zand en zonnige momenten, exh. cat., Katwijk, 2006, p. 3 for another work by the painter depicting van Beurden in his studio.
