Description

Gold Seal 100 Proof 1917

Distilled in Fall 1917, bottled in Spring 1931, ullage: low shoulder, Missouri tax stamp adhered to shoulder, front label and back label worn, original carton slightly worn

The Gold Seal brand was created under Prohibition as a catchall label for whiskey owned by the Security Warehouse and Investment Co., based in St. Louis. The company, which had a license to sell whiskey for medicinal purposes, bought up stocks from a wide variety of distilleries – in this case from the Elk Run Distillery in eastern Louisville, then bottled them under the catchall Gold Seal brand. Note that the label only says “whiskey,” not “bourbon” or “rye,” likely a reflection of the variety of mash bills under the company’s control.
