A landmark in the evolution of the modern wristwatch, the Reverso was introduced in 1931 as an ingenious solution to protect the dial during sporting activity, most notably polo. The present example, a circa 1931 Reverso Standard, represents one of the earliest expressions of this iconic design. Its dial, signed “Reverso Standard,” is of particular significance, reflecting the nomenclature used in the earliest years of production and marking it as part of the foundational generation of the model.

The purity of the design – defined by its rectilinear form and functional reversibility – is here complemented by a striking sense of originality. Of paramount importance is the remarkable consistency of the watch’s components. The outer caseback is numbered 8555, a number that is repeated inside the caseback and on the movement carrier, while the inner bezel is stamped with the corresponding digits “555.” This coherence across all elements offers compelling evidence that the watch retains its original configuration, with correct and matching case components.

Early Reverso watches are increasingly prized not only for their iconic design but also for their rarity in such well-preserved and original condition.
