A CHAMPLEVE ENAMEL AND GILT-BRONZE 'LOTUS' BEAKER VASE, GU
QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY
清十八世紀 鏨胎琺瑯番蓮紋棱式花觚
of hexalobed form, decorated to each side of the central section with a large lotus bloom with curling leaves below petal lappets, the neck and foot similarly decorated between bands of plantain leaves and ruyi pendant, reserved against a bright turquoise-ground, all between a gilt mouthrim and footrim incised with geometric scrollwork
Height 28.2 cm, 11⅛ in.
Beautifully enamelled vases, incense burners and other vessels decorated in the Champlevé technique were manufactured in Guangzhou during the Qianlong period, as discussed in Tributes from Guangdong to the Qing Court, Art Gallery, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, 1987, p. 54, where the authors explain how the 'flourishment of champlevé enamels in Guangzhou was closely linked to the needs of the imperial household and was stimulated by the new foreign champlevé techniques'.
A pair of identical champlevé enamel beaker vases, part of a garniture of five, was sold at the American Art Galleries, The Remarkable Collection of the Imperial Prince Kung of China, New York, 27th February - 1st March 1913, lot 358.
