Born in Hualien in 1957, Teng Pu-chun received a degree in traditional Chinese guohua painting from the National Taiwan University of Arts in 1984. Teng's family business of refining marble stones on the eastern coast of Taiwan cultivated his understanding of rocks and its properties. Combining his artistic training and studies on light and shading techniques from Western art, Teng creates meticulously stylised imageries of stones and scholar's rocks. In the present work, Teng employs a cun brushstroke with a Pointillist-like technique that employs a finer brush to create textured brushstrokes in a rubbing motion. Using an uncomplicated method of ink painting, Teng forms witty and quintessentially surreal landscapes in enchanted worlds exhibiting an unlimited vitality in the contemporary world of ink.
