Maitreya teaches from his celestial dwelling, awaiting the moment to bring about the enlightened liberation of all sentient beings. Maitreya, a Buddha of a future eon and a bodhisattva can be identified in this portrayal by the small stupa embedded within his jata or stack of dreadlocked hair. He reclines in a posture of regal comfort, his gaze friendly towards the observer. His hands are joined in a gesture called the dharmachakramudra symbolizing teaching. Lotus stems emerge from behind each of his shoulders.

This sculpture is a rare example from the Pala period that retains its original gilding. The intricate adornments of the bodhisattva showcase the late Pala style's refinement. A closely related image of Vajrasattva dated to the 12th century, sold in our London rooms, 4th December 1973, lot 136, is illustrated in Ulrich von Schroeder, Indo Tibetan Bronzes, Hong Kong, 1981, pl. 72E.
