The Sleeping Venus or Dresden Venus is thought to be one of the final unfinished works by Giorgione, which was completed by his pupil, Titian following the master’s death in 1510. Whilst the degree of involvement of each artist is a matter of scholarly debate it is considered the first pastoral life-size female nude in Western art and establishes an artistic tradition of mythological nudes in landscapes. The painting’s early provenance is not definitively known, but it was bought by Augustus the Strong in 1695.
