Patek Philippe began a new initiative in the early 2000s called the Advanced Research project. The goal was to exercise their creativity while researching new materials, new manufacturing technologies and new conceptual principles resulting in improved movements and functionality of their timepieces.
Produced in a limited edition of 500 pieces, the Reference 5650 is one of the results of the Advanced Research project and the only Aquanaut made under this initiative. This model features a blue dial embossed in the typical grenade-style and has an aperture at 9 o'clock through which the flexible mechanism with the four crossed leaf springs is clearly visible. In addition to these features, the reference 5650 includes displaying local time, local date, a second time zone, and a day/night indicator for both time zones. The 324 S C FUS automatic movement is housed in a robust white gold case, and has a blue rubber strap, making this modern classic a must have for a discerning collector of contemporary watches. Advanced Research creations are usually reserved for a small circle of watch enthusiasts, and only a handful of these wristwatches have been offered at auction, making this a fantastic opportunity for a collector.
