Description
An Italian carved walnut cassone, in the Renaissance manner
of sarcophagus shape, the front of architectural fashion, carved with triglyphs interspersed with armorial family crests symbolising a marriage, and military trophies.
68cm. high, 208cm. wide, 67cm. deep
An almost identical cassone is in the collections of, and on view at, the National Gallery of Scotland (illustrated in Timothy Clifford, Choice: Twenty-Years of Collecting for Scotland, 2005, pp.56-57, no.26), and has been dated to 1550-60. It had been previously sold by the Lord Astor of Hever, at Sotheby's London, 15th July 1983, lot 21.
