A large white and brown jade figure of a recumbent buffalo, 17th century | 十七世紀 灰白玉臥牛

The buffalo is a vital beast of the field for rice production and the rural economy. As such it is symbolic of agriculture and springtime, representing strength, endurance, perseverance, prosperity and tranquillity.

中國以農立國，牛與中華民族生存與發展的關係密切，自古便有不解之緣。在農業發展過程特別是春耕中扮演重要角色，並且是智慧、勤勞、忠誠以及刻苦的象徵。在中國美術史中，牛也常被賦予宗教或祭祀的色彩。

參考兩件青灰玉臥牛例，尺寸及玉質類似，其一為 Somerset de Chair 舊藏，先後兩次於倫敦蘇富比售出，分別為1952年9月18日，編號50，以及2004年6月9日，編號151；另一為前聯合國代理秘書長格拉德溫男爵舊藏，載於羅森，《Chinese Jade from the Neolithic to the Qing》，大英博物館，倫敦，1995年，圖版26:19。
