Released in 1924,The Thief of Bagdad featured art direction by William Cameron Menzies assisted by Anton Grot and Harold Grieve. Menzies' work on the film has been praised as a masterpiece of design: "The minarets reflected in the shining streets of Bagdad, the princess's bedroom with its staircase sweeping round the domed and canopied bed...the superbly executed glass shots...are brilliantly conceived. Menzies's personal vision of this world can be traced from the first rough sketches, through his beautiful paintings and drawings, right on to the screen." (John Hambley & Patrick Downing, The Art of Hollywood, Fifty Years of Art Direction, London, 1979, pp. 83 & 91-93).
