Workshop of David Teniers the Younger | Atelier de David Teniers le Jeune

This delightful panel reprises the composition of the painting by David Teniers the Younger in the British Royal Collection in Kew Palace (RCIN 407274), with some variations, the main one being a change to the background on the right side of the composition: the author of the present work has chosen to replace the country landscape with figures in the Royal Collection’s painting with a river and its banks, stretching to the distant horizon, thus transforming the composition’s balance and adding a peaceful atmosphere to the scene’s amusing character. The present painting is probably a variant created by Teniers’s workshop, of equivalent size and painted on a panel similar to those used by the artist, made by François de Bout (1616/22- before 1660), a member of the Guild of St Luke and active in Antwerp.

In the eighteenth century, the composition of the painting in the Royal Collection was disseminated in an engraving in reverse, but of the same size, made by Thomas Major for a collection called The Most Capital Paintings in England.

Ce charmant panneau reprend la composition du tableau de David Teniers le Jeune conservé dans la collection royale d’Angleterre, à Kew Palace (RCIN 407274) avec des variantes dont la principale est le changement de l’arrière-plan dans la partie droite de la composition. En effet, le peintre de notre tableau a choisi de remplacer le paysage de campagne animé du tableau de la collection royale par une rivière et son rivage à l’horizon lointain, transformant ainsi l’équilibre de la composition et ajoutant au caractère amusant de la scène une atmosphère paisible. De dimensions équivalentes et peinte sur un panneau fabriqué par François de Bout (1616/22- avant 1660), membre de la guilde de Saint Luc et actif à Anvers, similaire à ceux utilisés par l’artiste, notre tableau est probablement une variante réalisée par l’atelier de Teniers. 

La composition du tableau de la collection royale a été diffusée par la gravure au XVIIIe siècle en contrepartie de même dimension par Thomas Major pour un ensemble intitulé The Most Capital Paintings in England.
