An interesting example of a preliminary study in pastel, made to explore a sitter's expression, this portrait study reflects the method used by La Tour in his series of préparations for his finished portraits. The bold and quickly executed work is characterized by decisive and hatched outlines; the light, falling from the left, is suggested by the abundant use of white heightening. Touches of colored pastels - dark red, black and blue - are scattered around the contours of the head and also used to define the features of the face. Interestingly, the eyes, appear to be of two slightly different colors, so as to achieve a subtle variation and certainly a more interesting gaze.  

A very strong and contrasted image, this study conveys a bold and timeless approach to portraiture, typical of La Tour's great ability to uncover the personalities of his sitters.

Ce portrait est un exemple intéressant d'une première étude au pastel, réalisée dans le but d’étudier l'expression du modèle. Elle reflète la méthode utilisée par La Tour dans ses séries d’études pour ses portraits aboutis.

L'œuvre audacieuse et rapidement exécutée se caractérise par des contours décidés et hachurés ; la lumière, tombant de la gauche, est suggérée par l'utilisation abondante de rehauts de blanc. Des touches de pastels colorés - rouge foncé, noir et bleu - sont disséminées autour des contours de la tête et utilisées pour définir les traits du visage. Soulignons que les yeux semblent être de deux couleurs légèrement différentes, afin d'obtenir une variation subtile et certainement un regard encore plus captivant.

Cette étude, image très forte et contrastée, transmet une approche audacieuse et intemporelle du portrait, typique de la grande maîtrise de La Tour pour révéler la personnalité de ses modèles.
