A GEORGE III SILVER-GILT HOT WATER JUG AND MATCHING GEORGE IV SILVER-GILT TEAPOT, MAKER'S MARK IB OVER WB (GRIMWADE 1982 #3626) / WILLIAM ELLIOTT, LONDON, 1764 / 1822
the first pear form, chased with swirling rococo scrolls spaced by flowers, urn finial, ruffled leaf spout, leather-wrapped handle, carefully matched on the teapot, both engraved with crescent crest in Order of the Garter under ducal coronet

The crest is that of Percy as borne by the Dukes of Northumberland, presumably for Hugh Percy, 3rd Duke of Northumberland (1785-1847). In 1817 he succeeded his father as Duke and married Lady Charlotte Clive. In 1825 he was Ambassador Extraordinary to the coronation of Charles X of France in 1825, where he "astonished the continental nobility of the magnitude of his retinue, the gorgeousness of his equipage, and the profuseness of his liberality". He was made Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland in 1829, and Robert Peel (see lot 26) called him "the best chief governor that ever presided over the affairs of Ireland."
