SAVONAROLA'S RESPONSE TO HIS EXCOMMUNICATION. Alexander VI finally excommunicated Savonarola on 13 May 1497, his letter reaching Florence on 18 June. Savonarola immediately wrote an open letter to protest that he had never slandered the pope and that his critics were the cause of this injustice. This short letter, in Italian, was for everyone to read, and he also produced a longer one in Latin with arguments from theological writers for the more educated to digest. The declaration of excommunication caused even more divisions within Florentine society between Savonarola's supporters and opponents.
