This cup is notable for the subtle variation of the traditional doucai palette as seen in the delicate use of three different shades of green and opaque blue enamels. Overglaze blue enamel was introduced during the Kangxi emperor’s reign when it was initially imported from Europe and produced locally from the sixth year of Yongzheng. While a common feature of famille verte decorated and falangcai porcelain, it is not commonly seen on doucai wares, which typically only incorporated underglaze blue; for an example of the more typical Yongzheng doucai palette, see a bottle vase sold in these rooms, 8th April 2010, lot 1862.

A closely related pair of cups of slightly smaller size, from the collection of James and Marilynn Alsdorf, was sold in our London rooms, 18th May 1971, lot 235, again at Christie’s Hong Kong, 23rd March 1993, lot 749, and in these rooms, 27th April 1999, lot 433; and another pair was sold at Christie’s New York, 21st September 2000, lot 359. For examples of bowls of similar size as the present lot, see one in the Nanjing Museum, Nanjing, illustrated in The Official Kiln Porcelain of the Chinese Qing Dynasty, Shanghai, 2003, p. 165; a pair from the Paul and Helen Bernat collection sold in these rooms, 15th November 1988, lot 1, and again at Christie’s Hong Kong, 20th March 1990, lot 656; and another pair sold twice in these rooms, 29th October 2001, lot 511, and 2nd May 2005, lot 602.

The motif of bats and clouds represents the wish for ‘vast happiness piled up to the sky’. The symbol of red bats combined with coloured clouds symbolise the upper limits of heaven (hongfu qitian). The clouds also form a pun, since the word for ‘cloud’ (yun), is homophonous to the word for luck, and they are considered benevolent due to their ability to supply water. Auspicious rainbow-coloured clouds are often depicted in lingzhi (longevity fungus) form, as the lingzhi itself has the form of the wish-granting ruyi (‘as you wish’) sceptre.

此鬪彩雲蝠盃,巧妙運用之深淺三色之綠彩及不透明藍彩,有別於一般鬪彩器,尤為珍貴。歐洲進口之釉上藍彩首見於康熙年間,直至雍正六年始能自力調配釉方,然釉上藍彩多施用於五彩器及琺瑯彩瓷,鬪彩尚以釉下青花為多,少見施用釉上藍彩者。傳統鬪彩色調,可參考一件雍正祥雲賞瓶,售於香港蘇富比2010年4月8日,編號1862。

Alsdorf 伉儷珍藏一對近類盃,於1971年倫敦蘇富比、1993年紐約佳士得,及香港蘇富比1999年4月27日,編號433,三度售出。另一對作例則於2000年9月21日售於紐約佳士得,編號359。再比一近例,為細川護貞舊藏,後售於香港蘇富比2014年10月7日,編號3102。如本品尺寸稍大之盌則較為常見,可參考南京博物院藏一例,刊錄於《中國清代官窰瓷器》,上海,2003年,頁165。白納德伉儷收藏之一對鬪彩盌,可作參考,曾於1988年11月15日售於香港蘇富比,編號1,後在1990年3月20日售於香港佳士得,編號656。另一對類例,則二度售於香港蘇富比,分別為2001年10月29日,編號511,及2005年5月2日,編號602。

蝙蝠祥雲紋飾,意喻「鴻福齊天」之讚賀,「雲」音類「運」,並為造雨之源,屬祥瑞之意。吉祥彩雲,常作靈芝雲頭造形,取自同為靈芝形之「如意」,寓意所願如意。
