William Plomer was a writer, editor and poet, and a trusted companion of Ian Fleming since 1929, when they met at a literary party in 1929 at Cheyne Walk. A wartime colleague in NI, Plomer was later a publisher's reader at Jonathan Cape. He was instrumental in getting Casino Royale published and took an active part reading and commenting on each successive Bond typescript. Plomer was, unofficially, Fleming's editor-in-chief. The novel Goldfinger is dedicated 'To my gentle reader William Plomer'. Ann Fleming noted that Plomer was one of the few people around whom Ian could relax. This tribute address was read aloud by Plomer at Fleming's funeral. See lot 74.
