Representing one of the most iconic forms in Ming dynasty Chinese furniture, the present stool, fangdeng, is notable for its well-proportioned and elegant silhouette, featuring the characteristic humpback-shaped stretchers and square-section legs ending in horse-hoof feet.
Two stools of this type are included in Wang Shixiang, Connoisseurship of Chinese Furniture, Hong Kong, 1980, pls A15 and A16. See also a set of four stools from the Dr S.Y. Yip Collection, sold in these rooms, 7th October 2015, lot 134; and another stool from the late Sir Joseph Hotung Collection, sold in these rooms, 9th October 2022, lot 197.
